The Good News
Got my iPhone 5s. It’s gorgeous. The fingerprint scanner is brilliant. For the first time in forever, I have a passcode on my device. I’ve even taken the control panel off my lock screen too, so that if my phone is lost/stolen airplane mode can’t be used to hide it from find-my-phone.
My AT&T contract isn’t up for a couple of months, but I’ve been really curious about T-mobile ever since they unbundled the device & the service plan.
I switched to T-mobile from AT&T because I admire how they are unbundling device & service. I want this to work very badly.

The News I Want to be Good
I bought my device at Apple and signed up for their interest free payment plan. With case and extra lightning cable it’s about $42/month. All in, I’m saving almost 30% on my phone bill. Plus, I can upgrade whenever I want. Market rates for used iPhones are quite good after 1 year, so upgrading in the future won’t be too expensive. And, if I decide to keep my phone more than 2 years, my bill is just $61 a month, compared to AT&T at $140 (they don’t lower my bill once
my their phone is paid for).
I really want this T-mobile thing to work.
By the way, in the 17 hours since I’ve had it, I’ve had pretty good signal & battery life. I’m on LTE in Tribeca & the upper west side. I don’t have much of a signal in my home (in Tribeca) away from the windows though. Data is fast, though my comparison is the data speed and device performance of the 4S.
Unfortunately, It’s the Same Ol’ Thing
Here’s the thing… [Read more…]

- One caveat. With AT&T I’d be charged for data overages, so needed a larger plan. My data is usually more than 500MB a month, but not much more. I can use the cheapest T-mobile plan because at worst, they’ll throttle my data not charge me more. And, if it’s a problem, the equivalent tier to what I have with AT&T is just $10 a month more plus tax [↩]
