The disrespect shown employees with open workspaces is beyond belief. Study after study shows that people are less productive, less healthy, and less collaborative yet the siren song of saving money is apparently too irresistible for companies to care.
Here’s yet another (great) article that talks about creative performance and well-being in crap workspaces. Considering how everyone is being asked to do more (a trend that will only get worse), and do so with more creativity, you would think individual creativity and performance would be cultivated to enable disruptive people to function best.
The whole article on creative performance and well-being is a great read, but the second-to-last paragraph sums it all for even the clueless to empathize with:
We don’t understand psychologically why putting someone in an impoverished space should work, when it doesn’t work for any other animal on the planet.
So many people say “wear headphones if you want some privacy”. Seriously? Sure, I’ll just destroy my ears on your dime.
