I believe consumer innovation in the mobile space is lapping the capabilities that IT provides to the business around mobile & innovation.
As an example, think about how quickly an IT department can “throw together” a mobile app driven by users. As a reference model, think about how quickly someone can throw together a quick mashup or even a complex spreadsheet model.
Now, if you think that’s bad… have a look at how much worse it’s going to get. From the cover of AM New York, leadership provided by, of all places, the transit authority:
Not only will companies have to deliver rapid mobile innovation, they’re going to have to create multiple apps and give users a choice. I mean… if the subway system can do it, why can’t corporate America?
Of course, the MTA has been surprisingly innovative when it comes to API’s and mobile apps (yes, they’re related) as I noticed back in early 2011.
